Isolate End Users Who Don’t Meet Security Policies

How Do you Protect the Good from the Bad?

Challenge

Lynn University experienced a number of virus and worm outbreaks that were spread by unprotected computer systems on their network and desired a solution that would protect the rest of their campus network from users who were not compliant with endpoint security best practices. Lynn investigated a number of alternatives to address their need to isolate non-compliant users at both Layer2 and Layer3 network levels without having to control or manipulate proprietary network switch devices. It was also important that the same quarantine technology be able to address their wireless and VPN remote access environments and integrate easily with their redundant Cisco 6509 router core network architecture.

Solution

Impulse’s Safe•Connect provided a vendor independent solution to isolate individual computers that did not comply with Lynn University’s acceptable use endpoint security policies. Lynn University was now able to apply the level of quarantine and enforcement they deemed appropriate to protect their wired, wireless, and VPN remote access users. Impulse’s I-LAN Technology provided the ability to quarantine and isolate non-compliant users and allow access to only the internal or external remediation services required to comply with acceptable use policy standards. The Impulse solution was easily integrated with Lynn’s dual-Cisco router core configured in HSRP mode to deliver the desired functionality campus wide.

SafeConnect Benefits

The Impulse SafeConnect™ system provides an open network access control (OpenNAC™) solution that easily integrates into vendor-diverse network environments. The inherent scalability advantages of SafeConnect’s distributed software architecture and managed support approach enables institutions to address their NAC enterprise requirements in a cost-effective manner.

SafeConnect OpenNAC offers an easy to implement and support endpoint policy management alternative that seamlessly connects into an institution’s existing multi-vendor infrastructure, and provides an evolutionary path to maturing NAC industry standards like IEEE 802.1x.

The solution provides the following capabilities:

  • Prevents unauthorized user access to wired, wireless, and VPN networks.
  • Ensures users maintain compliance with anti-virus, anti-spyware, Microsoft security patches, P2P file sharing software, and custom endpoint security policies through real-time security posture validation.
  • Automates the isolation of non-compliant devices at Layer2 using I-LAN quarantine technology and provides individualized remediation guidance independent of network switch hardware.
  • Manages flexible role-based policies for students, faculty, staff, and guests.

i-LAN Quarantine Technology

Isolates non-compliant users from accessing Layer2 and Layer3 network resources and limits user access to designated internal or external remediation domains, where it communicates the actions required to become compliant with the institution’s endpoint security policies and regain network access.

“Since deploying Safe•Connect, we have successfully protected our students from the security vulnerabilities that continuously threaten our residential dormitory networks.”
